Two Sudbury beaches can fly the Blue Flag

One of South Shields' most popular beaches beach has once again won two coveted national awards - marking its status as one of the best in the world.

Joss Bay at Broadstairs, which is popular with surfers, has been stripped of the prestigious rating it enjoyed previous year, although it hangs on to its Seaside Award.

Whitby is the only beach on the Yorkshire coast with a Blue Flag Beach Award.

They include Blue Flags, Green Coast Awards and Seaside Awards.

For three decades, the Blue Flag programme, which is owned by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), has had a transformational impact on water quality, environmental awareness, protection, safety and services. The award goes to sites with exceptional environmental awareness and water quality. Shanklin, Seagrove and Springvale beaches have today (Thursday) been awarded Seaside Awards, but Sandown does not appear on the list.

One of the main reasons parents chose not to take their children to the beach was because of cleanliness, 40 per cent were anxious about water quality, 38 per cent were put off by litter and 42 per cent were concerned about dog mess.
