Balotelli, who has not played for Italy since the 2014 World Cup, featured under Mancini at both Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Experience, a willingness to work with young players and an ability to make sacrifices were essential qualities that the FIGC needed to look for while they sought to appoint a new man to lead the Italian national team forward.

It will be a first role in global management for Mancini, who has left Russian club Zenit St Petersburg to take up the post.

Mancini was then free to sign a deal with the Azzurri, one that has quite clearly filled the boss with pride. "It went the way we wanted, we are happy and Roberto is happy", Fabbricini told journalists after the contract was signed in Rome.

"We'll explain everything about the contract tomorrow (Tuesday), he's very happy and so are we".

His first matches in charge will come against Saudi Arabia on May 28, France on June 1 and the Netherlands on June 4.
