SpotMini is an advanced four-legged robot from Boston Dynamics, who's made quite a name for themselves over the years by posting videos of their robots running around, autonomously following instructions while often being cruelly hit with sticks to determine how well they can handle obstacles.

Looking like their very own version of the 'Black Mirror' episode Metalheads, Boston Dynamics have swapped the TV show's unstoppable robot dog for their very own Atlas android.

The engineering and robotics firm Boston Dynamics released clips of its humanoid robot jogging through a field. Boston Robotics is a pioneer in the robotics field and one of the most advanced in the area.

"The SpotMini robot ... is one that was motivated by thinking about something that could go in an office-in a more accessible place for business applications". After almost three decades, Boston Dynamics will finally begin selling its robots, beginning with none other than the SpotMini. It weighs in at 66 pounds and can go for around 90 minutes on a single charge. While there's no word yet on price, the company has said that the SpotMini prototype was 10 times less expensive than its older sibling.

"We are now taking the next step, combining the principles of dynamic control and balance with sophisticated mechanical designs, cutting-edge electronics, and software for perception, navigation, and intelligence", the founders state on the company website.

The robot's main frame has a quick-disconnect battery, stereo cameras in the front, side cameras and a "butt cam", but it can also be upgraded with a series of attachments on the top, including an articulated arm.

Techtonic shift Founded in 1992 by an extraordinary team of engineers and scientists, Boston Dynamics was acquired by SoftBank a year ago. Atlas, for example, has the remarkable ability to perform a ideal backflip, though it's not always so steady on its feet.

Updated on May 13: The SpotMini will go on sale in 2019.
