Kvitova wins Madrid Open for third time

Petra Kvitova became the first woman to win three Madrid Open titles after edging a titanic tussle against Kiki Bertens in the final.

Bertens paid tribute to her opponent and agreed with Kvitova that the final had been a thrilling spectacle.

The 19-year-old Shapovalov, regarded as one of the brightest stars on the ATP Tour and ranked at 43 in the world, fired 29 winners past Edmund, a surprise semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January.
