IEBC Scatter as Three Commissioners Resign at Once

Margaret Mwachanya and Paul Kurgat said the electoral agency's boardroom had turned into a venue for peddling money, misinformation and grounds for brewing mistrust.

The commissioners' resignation leaves in office three other commissioners after Roselyn Akombe resigned in October past year saying she feared for her safety and that the IEBC as then constituted could not hold credible repeat elections.

The resignations came at a time when Chebukati had called a crisis meeting to resolve issues affecting the electoral body after IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba was sent on a 3-month compulsory leave.

"The institution has continued to be dysfunctional, with arbitrary decision-making, leaking of internal documents and pursuing of personal interests", the three officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said in a statement they released at a news conference in Nairobi.

The trio further disclosed that the decision to suspend Chiloba was made in absence of some of the Commissioners.

Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen said Chebukati and the two remaining commissioners should resign within a week or a tribunal would be formed to investigate them. "The events leading to suspension of Chiloba have greatly shaken our already feeble confidence in the Chair. Consequently we regret to announce our resignation from the commission with immediate effect", they said.

Upon nullification of August 8 polls, commissioner Roselyn Akombe was first to exit the scene, citing external interference in the commission.
