Salah hits 40 goal mark as Liverpool beat Bournemouth in Premier League

16 April 2018

Mohamed Salah became only the third Liverpool player to score 40 goals in a season in all competitions as they claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

Henderson curled a teasing cross into the penalty area and Mane found a pocket of space inside the Bournemouth area to glance a header at goal which goalkeeper Asmir Begovic parried.

Routine Begovic saves from Alexander-Arnold and Salah followed, with the home side relentless in attack and their pace terrorising a scrambling Bournemouth back-line.

Just like against United last weekend when a 2-0 half-time lead disappeared in 16 minutes, City threatened to let another promising position slip away when Christian Eriksen brought Spurs back into the game just before the break with a bit of fortune when Aymeric Laporte's clearance ricocheted off the Dane and past the helpless Ederson.

The Egyptian glanced in a fine looping header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's precision cross in the 68 minute to further the Reds' advantage against the Cherries.

The benchmark for Liverpool performances was set 30 years ago.

Referee Chris Kavanagh was unmoved, but that ball over the top to Salah showed the way to get him in and he finally scored in the 69th minute.

The score also gave Salah 40 in all competitions and 30 in the Premier League this season.

All of Liverpool's prolific front three were on target as Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino struck either side of Salah's deft header to take their combined tally for the season to 82.

Liverpool progressed through to the last four in Europe with a 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City, but only after coming through two high-intensity clashes with the Premier League leaders. Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain dribbled down the middle of the pitch and laid off a pass to Firmino just as he reached the box.
