Earlier, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, in an interview to a news channel, had stated that the culprits in both Kathua and Unnao would be punished and justice done to the victims.

The rape of a 16-year old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao took place reportedly last year, where the girl was gangraped by a BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother. A week later, her raped and battered body was recovered.

The incident came to light after the victim tried to set herself ablaze outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence on Sunday. According to police, she had been abducted and raped by an SPO Deepak Khajuria, who was a part of the team sent out to find her when she was missing. The J&K Police have arrested 8 culprits in connection with the crime.
