Israeli PM warns of nuclear arms race in Mideast

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the Israeli prime minister did not ask to meet with U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

"I call on all the coalition partners, and chief among them Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, to remain in the government and continue this partnership in order to ensure security, prosperity and stability for the State of Israel", he said. "We don't want elections, and we don't want the government to break up, but not at any price".

In the past, the parties have compromised over the issue, but at least one coalition partner suggested Netanyahu was not invested in preventing the government's collapse.

The ultra-Orthodox parties, which possess 13 of the government's 66 seats in the 120-seat parliament, threaten to leave the coalition if a law granting ultra-Orthodox men exemption from conscription fails to pass.

After a more than year-long investigation, Israeli police last month said they believed there was sufficient evidence to indict Netanyahu in a pair of bribery scandals. In the other, he is suspected of promoting regulation that would benefit an Israeli daily newspaper in exchange for more favorable coverage.

But even as he prepared to meet Trump, a former aide who had been among his close allies was signing a state witness agreement with the police to testify against him.

Netanyahu has denied the charges and wrongdoing in any of the cases. Netanyahu "didn't know a word of English" and described his experience as "bizarre and hard for me".

As for the Palestinians, who are furious at Trump for overturning decades of USA policy and recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Netanyahu said: "We have not walked away from peace negotiations".

But in a late meeting Sunday, ultra-Orthodox factions told Netanyahu they would agree to support the budget if the military conscription bill passed the ministerial committee and an initial parliamentary reading, postponing a final vote until the summer session.

I think we're seeing it shift from a very purposeful initiative to just a fact of life, to just a way of doing business". Even as he's that vague about it, though, he also doesn't seem all that rattled by any of the insane things he's seeing.
