Backlash Against Anti-Muslim Poster Inciting Violence Goes Viral in UK

It follows reports of threatening letters calling for a day of violence against Muslims on April 3.

Speaking in the Commons yesterday, Monday, March 12, Mr Streeting asked the government to implement police visits after households across the United Kingdom, including east London, reported receiving a letter inciting violence against Muslims on April 3, which the letter called Punish a Muslim Day.

Rupa Huq has become the latest Muslim Labour MP to receive a suspicious package along with a so-called "Punish a Muslim" letter.

All four of the packages sent to MPs have been found in the Norman Shaw north building in the parliamentary estate, which is linked by a walkway to Portcullis House.

Police were called into the parliamentary estate yesterday after a letter was sent to a politician, believed to be Mohammad Yasin, Labour MP for Bedford.

In a later tweet, Huq said one member of her staff had been treated in hospital "as he handled the irritant substance", but he was discharged later Tuesday.

MPs have condemned letters encouraging recipients to take part in "Punish a Muslim Day" as "abhorrent".

But, she said: 'It is frightful though, it's really very frightening.

And Ian Austin, Labour MP for Dudley, said he would use the day to visit as many mosques and Muslim community centres in his constituency as possible "to show them I am on their side" and called on other members to join him.

"The affected areas were temporarily cordoned off but no evacuation was necessary", a spokesman said.

Both of the packages delivered on Monday afternoon were found to be non-harmful.

'Specialist officers are on scene and the package is being assessed.

"Sadly, it is reflective of hate against Muslims which continues to manifest itself alongside the rise of the far-right", said the council, which represents some 2.7 million British Muslims.

It released a statement, saying: "It is essential that all letters and envelopes are kept and handled minimally to preserve evidence for the police to investigate".
