Indian Wells: Novak Djokovic suffers shock loss, Roger Federer sails through

12 March 2018

Five-time victor Novak Djokovic is out of the BNP Paribas Open after suffering a three-set defeat to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel in the second round.

Other seeded men advancing were: No. 7 Kevin Anderson defeated Evgeny Donskoy 7-5, 6-4, No. 12 Tomas Berdych rolled past German Maximilian Marterer 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour.

The contest started on Saturday, although rain halted Federer's march into Round 3 and suspended the match for a day.

"For me it felt like first match I ever played on the tour". After another 90-minute delay organizers suspended play for the night.

Federer, who regained the world No 1 ranking last month, is on a quest to make history in the California desert by winning an unprecedented sixth Indian Wells title. He plays Filip Krajinovic in the third round.

Djokovic, who won the Indian Wells event in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016, was knocked out early for the second year in a row. He returned for the Australian Open with a revamped, abbreviated service motion created to relieve pressure on the elbow and showed flashes of fine form before eventually losing in straight sets to Hyeon Chung in the fourth round.

West Bromwich Albion are due to hold crisis talks on Monday as Alan Pardew discusses his future with the club's board. Leicester City came from behind to register a 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthornes.

A lot was expected of Djokovic, but the Serb was rusty and made 61 unforced errors in the match against Daniel that lasted two hours and 30 minutes.

Novak Djokovic's return from an elbow surgery did not live to see more than a day as the former World No. 1 fell 6-7 (3), 6-4, 1-6 to the 109th ranked Taro Daniel of Japan.

"It feels insane; I mean, I'm still in shock", said Anisimova, whose parents are Russian but who represents the United States, where she was born and raised.

Gael Monfils beat the 15th seed John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5; Pierre-Hugues Herbert beat the 24th seed Gilles Muller 6-3, 7-5 and Dudi Sela prevailed over the 21st seed Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-4.

Federer said he understands well how even a champion like Djokovic could be struggling to find his game so soon after having surgery.

Djokovic underwent right elbow surgery after falling in the fourth round of the Australian Open in January.

PPP President Asif Ali Zardari also condemned the incident and said that such incidents were against the democratic values. Police identified the shoe thrower as Abdul Ghafoor, a former student of the seminary, and his accomplice as Sajid.

Federer is a five-time victor of the BNP Paribas Open, which ties him with Novak Djokovic for the most of all time.

"Tennis was always my life since I'm a baby", said Verdasco. "Just didn't feel good at all, nerves were there". Honestly making - I think, if I'm not wrong, in two games two double faults on each one, and giving him the possibility to go 3-0 in the score with two breaks.

"I just came to understand how I had to play against Lleyton".

For Daniel, a third-round meeting with world No. 47 Leonardo Mayer awaits.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion who lost to Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open, eased to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marton Fucsovics.
