Mugabe, 94, was forced to resign following a military takeover in November after leading Zimbabwe for nearly 40 years. After the coup, Mugabe was confined to private life shuttling between his rural home in Zvimba and private residence in Harare's richest suburb‚ Borrowdale.

In response to that, President Mnangagwa, who has on several occasions hailed Cde Mugabe as his father, mentor and the country's liberator, said if the reports are true, they are not amusing. Instead he is rallying behind a new organisation called New Patriotic Front (NPF), and has also had meetings with other opposition leaders.

Mnangagwa was addressing the Zanu PF National Youth Assembly for the first time since the December Congress that put him in power.

"Currently, we see and hear various speculations and I have no doubt that very soon the facts and reality will be known. It is an issue we are examining".

Mnangagwa told the youths never to forget or neglect the founding values upon which the party and the country were built and underscored the need for uttermost unity and discipline within the party's youth league rank and file. "Can someone try and talk to Mugabe?"

"If he associates with new political parties or is influenced by those who influenced him before, we will lose respect for him and, as youth, we have made this decision, but we will stand guided if he withdraw that behaviour and started to work as a true Zanu PF member. Let us as the youth leadership of the revolutionary party esteem transparency, accountability, honesty and integrity", he said.

"President Mugabe said that as Zimbabwe prepares for elections, "everyone should fight to ensure that people are free to belong to parties of their choice and that there is no interference by the army or those that would want to resort to violence as a means of getting votes". Unlike in the past when he would commandeer the national flag carrier Air Zimbabwe‚ Mugabe flew business class with about 12 aides.

"He seems like he has been taken by another spirit and we will not leave it like that, as has happened with our revolution when he was influenced by a clique of anti-revolutionaries to destroy Zanu PF", he said.
