One of Nest's cameras can now double as a Google Assistant

Nest says the app update that lets users toggle Google Assistant functionality should hit sometime today.

While the Assistant integration seems fairly complete, there doesn't appear to be any controls for controlling the Nest Cam IQ itself. You just have to grab Nest's free software update in order to start barking Google Assistant voice commands at the camera. It's far and away the "smartest" home security camera you can buy today.

It should be no surprise to see Nest and Google products working more closely together, as Nest was recently demoted from standalone Alphabet company to Google subsidiary.

These significant changes come after Google fully integrated Nest back into the company. The 10-day video history costs $10 a month (or $100 a year) for the first camera and $5 a month (or $50 a year) for every additional camera, while a 30-day recording plan costs $30 a month (or $300 a year) for the first camera and $15 a month (or $150 a year) for each additional camera. In other words, the update essentially turns your Nest Cam IQ into a Google Home, which is quite useful if you don't already own that gadget and don't care for its more limited utility as a music speaker.
