White House Wants To Deliver Food To The Poor, Blue Apron-Style

The USDA claims the proposal would save $129.2 billion over the 10-year-period between fiscal years 2019 and 2028.

In an effort to cut spending on food assistance to low-income families, the Trump administration has proposed replacing some food stamps with a meal delivery type service.

This plan would both save the country money and provide low-income families with better food options than they are now receiving, White House OMB Director Mick Mulvaney said, according to Politico.

The box, coined as "USDA America's Harvest Box", would include food grown by American farmers including milk, juice, cereals, pasta, canned produce, and more, according to the administration's proposal.

We will get better as a side, and those players will get better. "The TMO has one big decision to make and unfortunately he's made a awful mistake".

The president's budget proposal still needs to be approved by Congress and will likely face modifications before that time.

As part of the budget, the Department of Agriculture - which runs the SNAP program - would send basic food items to households receiving more than $90 a month in SNAP assistance in boxes.

In a statement to WBOC, Maryland Republican Congressman Andy Harris said the proposal that will spend money on food grown in the US will be of "great benefit to farmers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland".

The Food Marketing Institute, which has grocery stores and pharmacies as members, challenged the idea that food boxes would save money. Many are concerned families would not know what food they would get in advance. The food bank says they would feel the immediate domino effect of this cut.

"The a classic example is that we don't want to pre box a share of food and give it to folks who have peanut allergies and assume they want peanut butter".

"Everybody was upset that this opportunity would probably be taken away from us", said Bobby Dorsch, manager at Piggly Wiggly in Leland. "They might not even use the items in the box", Haynes-Maslow said.

And some of the foods may be off-limits to recipients for health or religious reasons, she said. Kevin Concannon, who oversaw SNAP during the Obama administration, also wasn't in favor of the measure.

Others, like the owner of Green Apple Market, say they accept government money for their goods, and fear a program change could be a big hit on his business. "In the meantime, we will continue working with the United States Department of Agriculture to ensure the almost one million SNAP recipients in Tennessee have access to nutritional assistance through the program".
