Markets open on a higher note today

The benchmark BSE Sensex was trading 289.53 points, or 0.85% higher in afternoon trade, as banking, IT, pharma and oil stocks gained amid firm global markets.

PNB stock ended 10.39 per cent or 16.80 points down at Rs 144.80.

The 30-share barometer rose by 141.52 points, or 0.41percent, to close at 34,297.47.

The pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index climbed 1.1 percent.

Mumbai: Benchmark Sensex succumbed to fag-end profit-booking to end 144 points lower at 34,156 on Wednesday after banking stocks tumbled on Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) new norms for recognising stressed assets.

However, Punjab National Bank, India's second-largest state-run lender with assets of $120 billion, dropped as much as 8.6 percent to its lowest since October 24, after slumping around 10 percent in the previous session when the lender said it had detected fraudulent transactions at a Mumbai branch. However, it slipped on profit-booking to touch a low of 34,028.68. Rajesh Exports fell 1.34 percent to a low of Rs 808.70 on BSE.

On a closing basis, the scrip of PNB closed at Rs 145.80, down by Rs 15.85 or 9.81 per cent from its previous close of Rs 161.65.
