Detroit Standoff Ends With 4 Dead, 3 Police Officers Wounded

14 February 2018

Two women are dead and a Detroit Police officer was shot and wounded in a barricaded gunman situation that began Sunday night and spilled into Monday morning, Fox 2 reports.

Craig says one of the officers shot is an off-duty DPS officer who lives in the neighborhood. He is related to the victims and the girlfriend of the suspect who has been identified as 49-year-old Lance Smith. Little detail has been provided about the second shooter but police say he lives next door and is not now active.

Police fired flash-bang grenades and gas cannisters into the home multiple times between 10:30 p.m. Sunday and 2 a.m. Monday, when they lost all contact with the suspect.

A total of three women were killed, in addition to injuries suffered by two Detroit police officers and an off-duty Detroit Public Schools officer, all of whom were shot in the legs and will survive, according to Detroit Police Commander Elvin Barren. The couple lived near the home.

Meanwhile, a third victim may remain inside the home with the suspect.

Several fires were started by the suspect through the night, possibly for warmth, Craig said.

The Detroit police officers "were pinned down by gunfire for at least an hour", Craig said.

That DPS officer was first to respond to the scene, Craig said, after a neighbor notified him of shots fired.

At one point, the gunman was heard saying he "wouldn't go down without a fight".

The school officer was released from the hospital Monday.

We're told the gunman is a CPL holder, with seven guns registered to him.

"Right now a lot of people may think that someone who suffers from mental illness may not affect them - but that's not the case". Backup arrived, including Michigan State Police and the Detroit police departments' special response teams, and with the help of an armored vehicle they rescued the nine officers pinned by gunfire, including those wounded, and removed the bodies of the deceased, Craig said.
