The executive committee of South Africa's ruling party will hold a meeting today to "finalise" President Zuma's departure.

"We know you want this matter to be finalised, we know you want a closure in this matter", he said.

A spokesman for Ramaphosa, who also serves as South Africa's deputy president, said the ANC leader no longer had any public engagements on Friday or Saturday.

Edward Zuma said that "no amount of words" could express the family's disappointment, which is why they made a decision to issue the apology.

In 2008, the party pushed out then-president Thabo Mbeki over allegations of abuse of power.

"The African National Congress in the Greater Johannesburg Region has noted persons who are, under the guise of being members of the ANC Joburg Region, calling for the immediate removal of President Jacob Zuma or a "National Shut Down", said regional spokesperson Jolidee Matongo.

"We must keep our eyes on what is in the interests of all our people", he said, to the applause of thousands of ANC supporters.

The special ANC national executive committee meeting announced on Sunday morning for Monday was expected to put an end to Zuma's nearly nine years in office.

Getting Zuma to resign with it looking like an admission of wrongdoing would be contrary to the line he has been pushing, since becoming ANC president over a decade ago, that he only did what the people and the party requested him to do.

The party's National Executive Committee has the power to instruct Zuma to resign.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) last week asked National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete to reschedule its motion of no confidence in Zuma for Tuesday instead of 22 February.

Under Zuma, the ANC suffered its worst electoral setback since coming to power under Mandela in 1994, winning less than 54% of the vote in municipal elections in 2016.

The ongoing impasse over Zuma's resignation led to the cancellation of a series of public events last week, including the annual State of the Nation address on Thursday.

Luckily for the ANC and the country, Ramaphosa does not come to the presidency with a cloud of corruption hanging over his head.
