NY attorney general files suit against Weinstein Co

NY state has confirmed it will sue The Weinstein Company, alleging the studio failed to protect employees from owner and movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The lawsuit states that any sale of the company "must ensure that victims will be compensated".

Schneiderman's lawsuit alleges numerous instances of alleged harassment by Weinstein, including claims that multiple groups of Weinstein Company employees were responsible for facilitating Harvey's sexual encounters.

In December 2017 six women also filed a lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein and his former businesses in a proposed class action in the Southern District of NY.

The lawsuit follows a four-month investigation by Schneiderman's office that included interviews with company employees, executives and Harvey Weinstein's accusers.

The Attorney General's lawsuit alleges that company executives and board members repeatedly failed to protect employees from their then-CEO's unrelenting sexual harassment, intimidation, and discrimination. "This compelled service demeaned and humiliated them, contributing to the hostile work environment".

Schneiderman launched a civil rights probe into the New York City-based company in October after The New York Times and The New Yorker exposed allegations of sexual assault and harassment spanning decades.

Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul, was ousted from his role at The Weinstein Company past year after numerous reports of sexual misconduct.

A Weinstein attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
