The official said EASA on Friday issued an emergency airworthiness directive for A320 neo planes fitted with PW1100 engines having a particular serial number.

Budget airline IndiGo today said deliveries of A320 neo aircraft that are powered by Pratt & Whitney engines have been put on hold by Airbus and the engine maker.

IndiGo, the world's biggest buyer of the SE A320neo, was forced to replace faulty engines that power the jetliners in 69 cases over the last 18 months. "The passengers have also been given choice of a full refund", the official said.

Mr Coomber said it was the damaging winds causing the worst of the problems, with trees and branches knowing down powerlines. Between 20 and 40 millimetres fell across the region, with Brisbane receiving as little as 15 millimetres.

Air safety officials in Europe clamped down on flights by planes powered by affected Pratt & Whitney engines, citing "several occurrences of engine in-flight shutdown", according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to the airline, the recommendations by Pratt & Whitney as well as EASA are with respect to a certain sub- population of engines, with a particular engine configuration.

The A320neo's planned 2015 entry into service was pushed into 2016 because of GTF issues, and both Airbus and Bombardier have blamed Pratt for A320neo-family and CSeries aircraft delivery delays as Pratt & Whitney struggled to ramp up production as fast as needed and as fixes to address reliability and durability shortfalls were simultaneously introduced.

Its customers have also become less forgiving about performance standards as schedules tighten and airlines squeeze more flight hours out of their aircraft.

"Our precautionary measure of grounding the three aircraft resulted in cancellations of some of our flights", IndiGo said.

"We have identified the potentially affected engines and communicated with our customers", Pratt & Whitney said in a statement.
