We count on India to achieve just peace: Abbas

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi was accorded ceremonial guard of honour at Al-Muqata'a, the compound of the presidential headquarters in Palestine's Ramallah on his historic visit on Saturday.

The visit, which came weeks after Modi hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was seen as an Indian effort to balance its strengthening ties with Israel.

President Mahmoud Abbas, who described PM Modi as a "great guest", said Palestine was relying on India's great standing on the worldwide stage to facilitate the peace process with Israel.

PM Modi will visit Oman for the first time as prime minister and will hold talks with the Sultan of Oman and other key leaders.

After arriving in Amman, Modi met King Abdullah II of Jordan who will facilitate his transit to Palestine on Saturday.

Narendra Modi is the first India Prime Minister on an official visit to Palestine.

Abbas thanked Modi for India's support for various Palestinian projects, saying this will enhance bilateral relations and serve the Palestinian population.

Abbas said he had "fruitful and constructive" talks with Prime Minister Modi and he updated the Indian leader on the overall developing situation in Palestine and in the region.

He said hopes for the return of peace in this region. However, India has also pursued friendly relations with Israel, engaging in a massive arms trade worth $1 billion a year and accounting for almost half of Israel's weapons exports. "India will always support Palestine's development journey".

India was one of the 120 UN member states that voted in favor of Palestine in the UN General Assembly resolution calling on the retract its recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital last December.

Modi will be visiting UAE on 10-11 February, after his visit in August 2015.

This is PM Modi's first visit to Jordan and also the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 30 years. On his arrival, PM Modi was received by Jordan Prime Minister Hani Al-Mulki. He will address the Indian community there on Sunday.

I have assured President Abbas that India is bound by a promise to take care of Palestinian people's interests.
