Pakistan's human right activist Asma Jahangir passes away

Jahangir always raised her voice against human rights violations and was a staunch supporter of democracy.

Her spokesperson said Jahangir was taken to a private hospital on Ferozepur Road after suffering a cardiac arrest today where she breathed her last.

She was also the co-founder of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and the Women's Action Forum.

There is still bad violence against women, discrimination against minorities and near-slavery for bonded laborers, but Jahangir told AFP during an interview in 2014 that human rights causes have made greater strides in Pakistan than it may appear.

She was also been an outspoken critic of the country's powerful military establishment, including during her stint as the first-ever female leader of Pakistan's top bar association. Born on January 27, 1952 in Lahore, Jahangir studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary before receiving her B.A from Kinnaird and LLB from the Punjab University in 1978. Her daughter Muneezay Jehangir is a TV anchor.

Punjab state chief Shehbaz Sharif tweeted that he was "deeply saddened" at the news.

The activist was put under house arrest and later imprisoned in 1983 for participating in the movement for the restoration of political and fundamental rights during the military regime of Zia-ul-Haq.

She received Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2010 and a Sitara-e-Imtiaz.

In 2007, the renowned activist was put under house arrest, when she agitated along with lawyers in response to the former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf's decision of unconstitutionally suspending Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as the chief justice of Pakistan's Supreme Court.
