Egypt's Armed Forces killed 16 militants and destroyed 66 militant hideouts on Sunday morning as part of a large-scale operation dubbed "Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018" that began on Friday, an official statement by the army's official spokesperson read.

The operation has been conducted by the second and the third field armies, in cooperation with Air Forces, military commando troops, Rapid Deployment Forces, and the Minutes of Interior, Refai said, noting that the all forces are combing the areas.

The Egyptian air forces carried out raids and pounded terrorist dens in North Sinai province as part of the "Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018", the Egyptian army said in a statement on Saturday.

El-Refaie said that law enforcement forces, supported by special forces and border guards as well as police, have carried out several simultaneous raids on towns in Central and Northern Sinai to chase runaway elements, eradicate them, and continue to demolish targets belonging to terrorist elements.

Schools in North Sinai have been closed until further notice starting Saturday as the army and police continue operations.

The attacks, mainly targeting police and military, increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.

Terrorists even attacked a mosque in North Sinai's Arish city last November, killing at least 310 Muslim worshippers and injuring more than 120 others, marking the deadliest terror attack and the first against a mosque in Egypt's modern history.
