Pence uses Olympics to push tougher stance on North Korea

10 February 2018

A big one could be a demand to cease the US-South Korean war games that North Korea claims are preparation for invasion.

Providing fuel to the ferry would have been a hard decision for Seoul because of concerns that North Korea is trying to use the Olympics to poke holes in worldwide sanctions against the country over its nuclear and missile programs.

The real Trump did not attend the Olympic Games, but Vice President Pence is in South Korea as part of the US delegation.

"The North Koreans should understand that for a summit or any kind of serious talks to occur, Moon needs to be able to take something to Washington - something that addresses denuclearisation", he said.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency also referred to Moon as president.

NC distances from Akbar Lone's 'Pakistan zindabad' remark
In the early hours, terrorist attacked the Army camp in Sunjwan in Jammu and Kashmir killing two JCOs and leaving six wounded. The NC MLA from Sonawari, Akbar Lone, allegedly shouted " Pakistan zindabad" in the J&K Assembly.

She is the first immediate family member of North Korea's founder Kim Il Sung to ever set foot in the South. North Korea has given no indication that it has halted, or even slowed, its pursuit of nuclear weapons despite outward signs of new co-operation with South Korea. But privately, officials said, Pence expressed concern to Moon about his more conciliatory tone toward North Korea.

There was United States vice president Mike Pence's warning that even though he was attending the opening ceremony, he wasn't going to enjoy himself (or something like that).

That said, these officials said that if the North Koreans had approached Pence with pleasantries, he would have responded in kind.

She shook hands with Moon and smiled faintly as the South Korean leader entered a meeting room at the Blue House on Saturday.

The vice president also met with North Korean defectors while in Pyeongtaek.

While neither Kim Yo Jong nor Kim Yong Nam are among the North Korean officials blacklisted under United Nations sanctions, the U.S. Treasury Department previous year included Kim Yo Jong on its list of blacklisted officials over her position as vice director of the ruling Workers' Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department.

That may turn out to be errant speculation, but the USA doesn't appear to share global relief that there's a glimmer of hope for diplomacy after a year of escalating tensions and fears of nuclear war, fueled by insults slung between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.

In the meeting, Moon was flanked by a number of top aides, including Chief of Staff Im Jong-seok, National Security Council chief Chung Eui-yong, National Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon, and Minister of Unification Cho Myoung-gyon.

Arriving on her brother Kim Jong Un's private jet for a three-day visit, Kim Yo Jong landed with the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam.
