Samsung Unveils The Wall

14 January 2018

The Wall will be on display at the Las Vegas Show until 12 January.

I'll talk about what's going on with the two most popular conventional TV technologies-LCDs (including most of what is marketed as LED sets) and normal OLEDs-in my next post, but in this post I'll discuss some of the more interesting alternative display technologies I saw at the show. It does seem like a technology that we'll see in future devices, and could even replace OLED as the hot display technology, as MicroLED doesn't have the same burn-in shortcomings. Better start saving now.

Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics spoke to the gathered crowd at CES: "At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing consumers with a wide range of cutting-edge screen experiences".

LG OLED
The proprietary LG OLED technology is designed to deliver perfect blacks thanks to its ability to turn each pixel on or completely off

Almost all of the big vendors have moved away from 3D TVs, as the technology just didn't gain market acceptance. Stream TV had a 65-inch 4K version (that it said features 8 million pixels), which should be shipping from partners later this year, and announced a partnership with Chinese panel maker BOE to build 8K sets. But it's worth keeping in mind that resolution, on its own, can only do so much.

A proprietary algorithm will not only adjust the content's screen resolution automatically, but it will continuously improve its picture frame by frame for the duration.

Even better, the 8K QLED TV Samsung were using for the demo is actually expected to launch this year, though it's currently only confirmed for the USA and Korea for now.

Its USP? Packing the ability to go five times brighter than the brightest TV now on the market, to give HDR footage some extra punch when it counts.

"It can transform into any size, and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels".

The television is expected to hit the market during the second half of 2018.

He said he also invited President Abbas to visit Ireland, and assured him that he would receive a warm welcome from the Irish people.

A remote enables you to unfurl the display a bit, to show basic information such as today's weather or family pictures. Suffice to say, we're pretty stoked.

Samsung isn't just content making TVs bigger.

Doesn't hurt to look, of course.
