Passports won't serve as address proof anymore?

14 Января 2018

There was, however, no word from the ministry on whether the passport would cease to be a valid document for proof of address for official purposes as a result of the move to do away with the personal details page.

The Ministry of External Affairs is considering a series of changes to the Indian passport. "Till such time the new passport booklets are designed, manufactured and made available to the ministry by ISP, Nashik, the passports and other travel documents would continue to be printed with the last page", Kumar added.

The MEA is also considering some changes in the colour of passports.

Experts said that creating separate passports for those with the Emigration Clearance Required (ECR) status will create discrimination.

Also, orange passports will be issued to those who require emigration checks, which will help speed up processes at airport.

India saw a rise of 30 percent in demand for passports following the liberalization of passport policies announced on 23 December 2016.

Ministry of Home Affairs of India has today stated that Indian Passports will never be considered as proof of address from now onwards. These are all included in the first page of the passport booklet.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi today objected to the government's decision to issue orange-coloured passport to people with Emigration Check Required (ECR) status and called it a result of "BJP's discriminatory mindest".

The choice of colour for the ECR passports has raised eyebrows as it comes close on the heels of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh painting public buildings saffron or orange.#. This will make it easier and more efficient during immigration checks.

After consulting the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regarding compatibility of passport booklets minus the last page, with Machine Readable Travel Documents, the MEA concluded that, "the last page of the passport and other travel documents issued under the Passports Act, 1967 and Passport Rules, 1980 would no longer be printed".

If the MEA decides to go ahead with this plan, these changes will be applicable the next series onwards, and the current passports will remain valid, reported HT.
