CDC Delays Nuclear Preparedness Training to Focus on Flu Instead

Between Dec., 31 and January, 6 Manitoba Health reports 17 deaths associated with the flu since September, 1, 2017.

The peak of flu season typically lasts until March, so it's not too late to get a flu shot, doctors say.

When comparing this year to last year, there is a significant difference, said Rains.

Harris said flu symptoms can last a couple of days, but someone can be infected with the virus for a week.

North Carolina health officials reported four new influenza-associated deaths on Friday, bringing to 26 the total deaths so far for a season that national and state public health experts are expecting to be nasty and deadly. However, the CDC cautions that "in recent past seasons in which A (H3N2) viruses predominated, hospitalizations and deaths were more common, and the effectiveness of the vaccine was lower".

While Maine reported 5,830 flu cases in 2016-17, the strains circulating were less severe and only 14 percent required hospitalization, according to the CDC.

In addition, while influenza A (H3N2) viruses have been the most common ones circulating nationally, influenza B has been the most common strain circulating in some regions of the state, including central NY. "Every individual over the age of six months should get a flu vaccine - not just for their own protection, but to protect others around them who may be more vulnerable to the flu and its complications". In contrast to the last large flu outbreak three years ago, anti-viral medication, such as Tamiflu, is well-stocked at area pharmacies.

The health team reports there are 89 lab-confirmed cases of influenza but suggests this number could be greater since many sufferers don't seek medical care.

"It can lessen [flu] severity and likelihood that you will be hospitalized", she said.

"Flu can kill and it is important we take it seriously". Elsewhere, there has been widespread media coverage of healthy adults who have died after getting the flu. The vaccine also offers protection against most other strains of flu now circulating in Wales. But the rate of hospitalizations almost doubled from 13.7 per 100,000 the previous week to 22.7 per 100,000, he said. "There is nothing out of the ordinary in terms of the type of influenza that we're seeing", Harris said.

"We don't want to hand it out to everyone, we will create resistance if we do that", said Barret Procyshyn, president of Pharmacists Manitoba.

Health officials reminds folks the best prevention is proper hygiene, particularly hand-washing and if you're sick stay home from school or work.

"Signs to look out for are fever, body aches, it comes on pretty quickly and then you had headache and runny nose", said Andrew Zurcher, nurse practitioner at CHI Health's Quick Care on 50th and O streets.

While the Glasgow and Belfast branches both had some vaccine in stock, a backlog of patients meant the supplies were accounted for and no new patients would be able to receive them during a walk-in-appointment, they said. Having a flu jab significantly reduces your chances of getting flu in the first place; but if you are unlucky and still catch it, your illness is likely to be milder and shorter.
