Wyoming Homeless Programs Get $292K in Federal Funding

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced its award of $12.7 million to support 34 homeless housing and service programs in Western New York, including some in Niagara County.

This year, at the national level, HUD plans to send $2 billion in the grants to more than 7,300 programs helping the homeless.

"We are delighted that the El Dorado County Opportunity Knocks program was recognized for these grants as they will greatly increase the vital services that homeless individuals need to help get them off the streets and on to a better way of life", said Patricia Charles-Heathers, El Dorado County's Health and Human Services Director.

Last month, HUD reported homelessness crept up in the USA, especially among individuals experiencing long-term chronic homelessness.

At least 553,742 people in the US experienced at least one night of homelessness a year ago, according to HUD. While homelessness among families with children declined 5.4 percent nationwide since 2016, local communities report long-term chronic homelessness increased.

HUD annually provides one to two rounds of funding to end homelessness through the CoC program, called the Emergency Solutions Grant and the HUD CoC competitions.

In New Jersey, HUD estimates there were 8,536 people were homeless on a single night in January 2017, representing an overall 4.0 percent decrease from 2016 and a 38 percent decrease since 2010. In addition, homelessness among families with children declined 14.2 percent across the state since 2016. That was 0.7 percent higher than in 2016.
