Which 7-Elevens in Pa. were raided by ICE this week?

13 January 2018

The Associated Press reports Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided almost 100 stores in states like Maryland, California, Florida, and Missouri in a nationwide sweep that has been described as "the largest operation against an employer under Donald Trump's presidency".

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement carried out the raids on Wednesday.

The agents opened employment audits and interviewed workers in what officials described as the largest operation against an employer under Donald Trump's presidency. ICE Acting Direct Thomas Homan said in October that he wants immigration agents to devote "four to five times" more time on illegal hiring investigations to crack down on employers and unauthorized workers alike.

"As part of the 7-Eleven franchise agreement, 7-Eleven requires all franchise business owners to comply with all federal, state and local employment laws", the company said.

ICE says it's targeting employers in these raids, but the employees are the ones who are being arrested right now.

7-Eleven owners and managers have three days to respond to ICE's audit regarding the immigration status of their employees. All but one, who was a fugitive until November 2017, pleaded guilty, and they were forced to pay more than $2.6 million in back wages.

Derek Benner, a top official at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told AP that Wednesday's audit and investigation operation is "the first of many" and a "harbinger of what's to come" for many employers. 7-Eleven said franchisees are responsible for verifying their employees' work eligibility.

According to the paper, at least 163 immigrant workers were arrested by ICE after they got injured on the job.

Meanwhile, ICE agents swarmed almost 100 7-Eleven stores nationwide, on Wednesday, arresting 21 employees alleged of being in the country illegally.

The Trump administration said on Monday that the Central American migrants must leave or seek lawful residency, giving them an 18-month grace period. As the investigative team at the Naples Daily News expertly detailed last month, Florida law is basically created to let employers hire undocumented people as little more than indentured servants in risky and labor-intensive jobs such as construction and farm work.

Some other lawmakers who have been engaged in the negotiations were also optimistic; others said no deal had yet been reached. The DACA program is about to run out for so-called " dreamers " or young immigrants who came to the US illegally as minors.

ICE characterized its action Wednesday as a "follow-up" to actions it took against 7-Eleven franchises in 2013.

In December, when ICE announced its end-of-year arrest numbers, Homan said the public can expect more workforce enforcement. "It's going to be inclusive of everything we see out there".

She said ICE can't go on "fishing expeditions" and there's a concern that ICE could be detaining people who don't present a danger or have valid legal claims against deportation.

The franchise sites in Bulls Head, at the corner of Victory Boulevard and Richmond Avenue, and Sunnyside, near Clove Lakes Park, were not part of the early-morning sweep, workers said. They're essentially charging into stores and ordering managers to turn over their I-9s or other employment eligibility documents.
