Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is stepping down as chairman of Breitbart News Network after a public break with President Donald Trump.

In addition, Sirius XM announced on Tuesday that it has severed its relationship with Bannon, who was hosting a show on the satellite radio provider, "since our programming agreement is with Breitbart News".

Bannon attempted to backtrack days later, saying he "regrets" his comments; adding they were only intended for Paul Manafort, not the President's eldest son.

One of the chief architects of the nativist Make America Great Again rebellion has gone from one of the top jobs in the White House to being too toxic even for their house publication Breitbart.

Bannon maintained his visibility by rejoining Breitbart in August and directing it to serve his political ends as the insurgent voice of the "anti-establishment" wing of the Republican Party, a faction that many critics saw as a socially intolerant and racist fringe of white nationalism. But this is absolutely true, that Steve Bannon is responsible for Donald Trump's election.

Bannon said the comments in the book were not accurate.

Bannon left the White House last summer and returned to his position as executive chairman at Breitbart News, but reports indicated he had fallen out of favor with wealthy conservative backers as his comments in Wolff's book surfaced. When he was sacked, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind, " the president said. "It wasn't just Bannon's quotes to Wolff, but how he mishandled the fallout". Mercer was also behind Bannon's ouster from Breitbart, according to the New York Times.

But those projects might require fundraising and Bannon, through his falling-out with Trump, has alienated the billionaire Mercer clan, which would have been his most natural source of financial support.
