Rollable OLED, Micro LED Wall Are CES Display Tech Standouts

It's sheer gargantuan size is guaranteed to draw media and CES attendee attention while its host of cutting-edge new technologies give a glimpse of what Samsung is working on for their newest consumer models.

Few of the new TVs will cost as much as Samsung's 146-inch, modular, Micro LED television, dubbed The Wall, however, but the company also revealed it would also launch an 85-inch 8K television in Australia later this year.

So what exactly are these other technologies?

They're all part of LG's ThinQ concept, too - which at this stage means the ability to learn your watching habits and (for the USA and Korea to begin with) direct Google Assistant interactivity.

MicroLED is based on Samsung's Cinema Screen technology, designed for movie theaters. While that phrase sounds like typical PR/marketing hyperbole, we are actually inclined to trust Samsung's diagnosis in this case.

In addition to the customizable Open Frame LG OLED displays demonstrated at CES, the 2018 family of LG OLED commercial displays includes jaw-dropping Wallpaper and Wallpaper-In-Glass models and innovative video wall units, as well as Dual-View Flat and Curved Tiling models. The MicroLED panels comprising the TV are quite unlike existing LED-backlit LCD technology, otherwise commonly found in LED TVs.

Life Time fitness center removes cable news channels from its screens

Finally, Sony was also keen to show off its 8K developments, with an as yet unnamed 8K TV. Even today's best OLED 4K TVs can't reach even half of that so far.

The 4K OLED display looks like a normal TV screen, but the back has small vertical slats which allow it to roll.

The RGB subpixels should also ensure a wider colour spectrum too, for an overall brighter, punchier picture than OLED, but still retain with the same great black levels and off-axis viewing. This results in a high contrast footage that is better than the traditional LCD screens.

Samsung Electronics launched "The Frame" lineup past year. It's not the same technology as OLED, and Samsung says it offers the ideal blacks of OLED but can get much brighter and has fewer off-axis color issues. We're not expecting this giant's price tag to even remotely fit any ordinary home theater budget.
