Now is the time to test your home for radon gas

13 January 2018

It comes from the ground and can accumulate in homes, raising the risk of lung cancer.

Radon is linked to more than 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the USA each year. One in four households tested in Nevada have levels at or above 4 pCi/l. If radon problems are found, they can be fixed.

Test kits can be ordered through the CDPH Indoor Radon Program webpage or by calling the program toll-free at 1-800-745-7236.

The DPH's radon program recommends that all CT homes be tested for the colorless and odorless radioactive gas.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Salisbury Barrack at 410-749-3101. Authorities say the clerk was the only person in the store at the time of the robbery.

"You can't see or smell radon, so testing is the only way to know how high the radon levels are in your home", said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, MD, FACOG.

Macomb County Health Director Bill Ridella said that while radon testing kits are available for free to the public all year long, officials want to stress the importance of obtaining a kit at the start of each year because radon isn't something that's on many people's minds. Results will be shared with homeowners and the Health Department. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that one in 15 homes nationwide has an elevated level of radon (a level at or above the action level).

Radon levels vary throughout CT.

The kits can be obtained online from the DPH's radon program website here.

Radon mitigation professionals are trained to reduce radon in homes using ventilation and depressurization systems and other techniques. Short-term test kits run cost from $7.30 to $12. The maximum reading for Greene County was 590 pCi/L, the minimum Greene County reading was 0.1 pCi/L, with an average reading of 7.14 pCi/L.

Tests should be done in the lowest level of the home that is frequently occupied. The envelope is sent to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality laboratory, where turnaround for the results is approximately two weeks. Most often, a radon mitigation system is installed in the lowest level of homes and ventilated outside above the rooftop to prevent radon gas from entering the house. As with many home repairs, the cost of radon mitigation varies.
