Market Now: BSE Midcap index trails benchmark Sensex

Asian markets were mixed, USA equities rose to record highs yesterday as investors remained optimistic about the market heading into the corporate earnings season.

30-share BSE Sensex gained 88.90 points to close on 34,592.39 and the broader 50-share NSE Nifty finished on 10,681.25, up by 30.05 points.

Among BSE sectoral indices, oil & gas index gained the most by 0.69 per cent, followed by banking 0.5 per cent, capital goods 0.48 per cent and metal 0.45 per cent.

A total of 109 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade today, while two stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

Among the secondary indices, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.41%.

"There is a little bit of hesitation seen ahead of key macro data coming later in the day". Positive trade in global market and expectation of revival in domestic earnings from H1FY18 is upholding the healthy sentiment.

On the currency front, the Indian rupee strengthened by three paise to close at 63.63 against the United States dollar from its previous close at 63.66.

On the other hand, the S&P BSE consumer durables index fell by 61.29 points, FMCG index by 56.56 points and healthcare index by 51.79 points.

ICICI Bank Ltd rose 2.7 percent, while Reliance Industries Ltd closed 1.2 percent higher.

Notable losers were TCS 1.27 percent, Bharti Airtel 0.82 percent and Wipro 0.45 percent.
