Huawei Chief Slams US Carriers After Collapse of AT&T Deal

The deal with AT&T was going to be Huawei's first partnership with a premier mobile carrier in the U.S. While customers in the U.S. can buy Huawei devices, they are not offered as part of a data package by a U.S. -based carrier.

Huwaei highly publicized their expansion to the United States markets via promotions on their U.S. Facebook Page and their tweets.

LAS VEGAS-The end of a rumored deal to sell Huawei phones through AT&T doesn't just hurt the Chinese company's plans for the United States market.

Huawei said in a statement on Tuesday that its flagship smartphone Mate 10 Pro - Huawei's challenger to the iPhone - will be sold in the United States only through open channels.

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. -based telecommunications company AT&T has made a decision to back away from a deal to sell Huawei's smartphones in the U.S. Huawei had been expected to announce the deal at CES that day.

At CES, an angry Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, admitted the end of the AT&T deal was a loss for the company, "but the more big loss is for consumers, because consumers don't have the best choice".

Huawei is the world's third-largest smartphone brand by volume of sales, following Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc.

"This makes it very hard for Huawei to get significant in the U.S.as the open channels account for only about 10-11 percent of the market", said Canalys analyst Mo Jia, referring to sales channels outside telecom carriers and vendors' own stores.
