The missiles are fired out of the Mk 29 Sea Sparrow Guided Missile Launching System that can be deployed on land and sea.

The SM-3 interceptor is already a critical part of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation missile defense system in Europe, with interceptors deployed on US Navy ships off the continent's coast, according to the manufacturer Raytheon. The U.S. Navy plans to steadily introduce the engage-on-remote system to its Aegis vessels.

Lockheed Martin Corp said on Thursday it had connected key components of its new long-range discrimination radar (LRDR) with its Aegis Ashore missile-defense system to enhance Aegis's capabilities. "Japan is no longer needed to exist near us".

Last month, the Japanese government approved the purchase and deployment of two Aegis Ashore batteries at the cost of some $2 billion, including infrastructure, with each unit of the system accounting for at least $888 million. Consequently, the government intends to carefully gauge the US side's intentions on this issue.

The White House has greenlighted the sale of four interceptor missiles that Tokyo wants to buy from Washington to "fundamentally" improve its defenses. One or two are engaged in warning and surveillance activities in the Sea of Japan.

Onodera also said the government now intends to apply Aegis Ashore for intercepting ballistic missiles, but eventually hopes to develop the system to enable shooting of various types of missiles, including cruise missiles.

North Korea continued its nuclear advances despite condemnation from the worldwide community. It would also allow Japan to defend against North Korean missiles without deploying Aegis-capable launch ships close to North Korean waters.

The Japanese government aims to start operation of the Aegis Ashore in fiscal 2023 to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles amid the growing North Korean threat.

The Aegis system is geared towards intermediate range ballistic missiles.
