Dozens killed as violence spikes near Damascus in Syria

Attacks on Eastern Ghouta, which lies on the outskirts of Damascus, the capital, have been frequent in recent days and are believed to be part of the Syrian government's assault on rebel-held positions in the area.

We review the key developments in Syria, including the Syrian government preparing for a counteroffensive in Eastern Ghouta, airstrikes in Idlib killing seven people, and shells from Syria landing in southern Turkey.

The war in Syria has killed more than 340,000 people and displaced millions from their homes since it began in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

Eastern Ghouta is mostly under the control of Jaish al-Islam rebels.
