Police in Wichita, Kan., charged Barriss with making a false alarm after someone called 911 with a similar shooting-and-kidnapping report at the home of Andrew Finch.
Just before 8p.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, Calgary 911 received a call from a man who claimed he had shot his father and was holding his mom and younger brother hostage.
Officers descended on an apartment building and were evacuating people when a woman called police and said she believed she was the victim of "swatting", in which a person makes up a false report to get a SWATteam to descend on an address.
The investigation led to California.

The number doubled the prior figure of 24 deaths this winter, upping the total to 48. According to NHS outlines, 85% of patients should be treated within this time.
The 911 call to Calgary police is eerily similar to the emergency call to Kansas authorities that led to the killing of an innocent man. Andrew Finch was shot by cops on December 28 in Wichita after the prankster called 911 with a story about a shooting and kidnapping at Finch's Wichita home.
"The service takes swatting events extremely seriously and will investigate each incident thoroughly", CPS said in a release. The release said it is believed the woman was "targeted because of her online persona".
Police and the FBI are investigating whether that prank call was prompted by an online gaming dispute, according to The Associated Press. Investigators quickly identified a suspect who had made contact online with the victim earlier that day.
He's charged with public mischief for allegedly falsely reporting that an offence has been committed, fraud for allegedly providing false information by letter or telecommunication, and mischief.

He is expected to be extradited to Kansas this month.
He was unarmed, but Wichita Police say an officer fired, thinking Finch was reaching for a weapon.
In recent years, he served time in Los Angeles County Jail after prosecutors charged him with making fake bomb threats that prompted evacuations of a Glendale television station and two schools.
Swatting is when a call is made to police claiming that a major incident, often involving hostages, is unfolding at a residence and usually results in a tactical team being deployed. "Swatting calls have the potential to create significant risks for both public and officer safety and can require an extensive amount of resources to respond and investigate".
