This year's show marked the Late Night host's first stint as host of the Globes, following fellow NBC late-night funnyman Jimmy Fallon's turn last year.
Others kept a watchful eye on the carpet to see if stars like Matt Damon (bashed for his insensitive comments on the on-going sexual harassment debate), Casey Affleck (accused of sexual abuse in the past), Jeremy Renner (infamous for refusing to speak about pay disparity in Hollywood), among others, attended the show in all-black.
"So thank you for all the wonderful work that you've all done and continue to do", he said, "I look forward to you leading us to whatever comes next". But the call to wear black gowns turned out to be part of a sweeping and ambitious initiative, called Time's Up, created by some 300 prominent actresses and female agents, writers, directors and entertainment executives to fight sexual misconduct across the country. "But don't worry, he'll be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person ever booed during the in memorium", Meyers deadpanned.
Meyers also said the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the Golden Globes, did try to get a woman to host this year's Globes, but then "they heard it would be held in a hotel", a reference to the many accounts of sexual misconduct taking place in hotel rooms.
The reputation of the Golden Globes is that they're the Oscars' rowdier, tipsier, weirder cousin - sometimes refreshingly so. Because, well, I've heard rumors that he's insane and hard to work with.

The included "one-touch open" case holds two additional charges for a total of 9 hours before you need to recharge everything. You lose out on the noise cancellation feature, but if all you want are solid workout earbuds, these might get the job done.
"It will sound like that". Meyer's joked, "I hope he can do a Southern accent because Kevin Spacey sure couldn't".
"The Shape of Water received the most nominations of film this year".
"Is that too mean?" he questioned, pausing meaningfully before adding: "... to Kevin Spacey?".
Later during the show, which saw Sterling K. Brown, Nicole Kidman and Elisabeth Moss among the night's first winners, Meyers took aim at U.S. president Donald Trump, pointing to Seth Rogen, who once upset North Korea with film The Interview.
But it wasn't all swipes at fallen Hollywood stars.

The model's fans were outraged by the online trolling, with many calling out the bullying. Still, with one zit, I'm a little bit self-conscious.
While introducing Meher Tatna, the HFPA president, Meyers joked that she was a president who "actually is a stable genius", in reference to Trump's tweets over the weekend.
"Remember when HE was the guy making trouble with North Korea?"
In a joke directed at Harvey Weinstein, Meyers referred to the disgraced movie mogul as the "elephant not in the room".
"And some have said that night convinced him to run". So if that's true, I just want to say: Oprah, you will never be president!
Trump doesn't foresee Oprah presidential run, but predicts he would beat her
Trump appeared on Winfrey's long-running talk show in 1988 and again with his family in 2011, during her final season. He has also been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, though he has vehemently denied the allegations.
