Lubaina Himid Wins Prestigious Turner Prize Age 63

Ms. Nashashibi, 44, was born in London to a Palestinian father and an Irish mother; Ms. Büttner, 46, is German-born; Mr. Anderson is the son of Jamaican immigrants; and Ms. Himid was born in Tanzania.

Musician Goldie presented the £25,000 ($32,000, 30,000 euros) award at the ceremony in Hull, northern England, to mark its year as UK City of Culture.

Lubaina Himid has become the oldest artist ever to win the Tate's Turner Prize, at the age of 63. While Rosalind Nashashibi, 44, made films focused on tense human situations in far-flung places, such as an abortive trip to the Gaza Strip, to quite haunting effect.

Himid was one of two artists aged over 50 on the four-person shortlist after the age limits were lifted.

The winners are determined using Glassdoor's proprietary algorithm and are based on reviews and ratings employees shared during the past year.

The members of the Turner Prize 2017 jury were Dan Fox, writer and co-editor of Frieze; Martin Herbert, art critic; Mason Leaver-Yap, Walker Art Center's Bentson Scholar of Moving Image and associate curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin; and Emily Pethick, the director of Showroom, London.

As part of the joint public programme, the Ferens Art Gallery will, with Hull 2017, host a special Lates event, Turner // Return, on Thursday 16 November, with a variety of music, entertainment, talks and other attractions. The exhibition continues until 7 January 2018.

The jury applauded the four nominated artists for their socially engaged and visually imaginative work. Established in 1984, the annual award is aimed at UK-based artists who have had an outstanding exhibition in the previous year.

Himid repeatedly questions the historical role of portraiture, as in works such as A Fashionable Marriage 1987, recently exhibited in The Place is Here at Nottingham Contemporary (2017).

Lubaina Himid has won the Turner Prize for what judges describe as her "expansive and exuberant approach to painting, which combines satire and a sense of theatre".

Himid makes paintings, prints, drawings and installations which celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora while challenging institutional invisibility. No, she lives and works in Preston, Lancashire, where she's a professor of contemporary art at the local university.
