Google's Progressive Web Apps will replace Chrome Apps next year

07 December 2017

Google has started following through on their plan to kill of Chrome Apps for Windows, Mac and Linux users by shutting down (or at least hiding) the Chrome Web Store Apps section for those platforms. By early 2018, Chrome apps will be rendered unusable and instead be replaced by recently-launched Progressive Web Apps (PWA) that rolled out on Android in February this year. Which app did you use most on your chrome browser? If you're wondering whether you'll miss out on much, don't worry: as Ars Technica noted, many Apps were essentially little more than bookmarks for webpages, with the added benefit of being able to access them from various parts of Chrome's interface. However, Chrome users who just browse the web will still be able to download and install extensions and themes. There's still no word on removing Chrome Apps from Chrome OS, though. PWAs aren't exactly a "standard" but are a catch-all phrase for a combination of existing W3C standards like a Web app manifest for app icons and service workers for push notifications and background updates. However, the Chrome OS users will still have access to the apps installed by the Store for the foreseeable future. Google says it's planning to bring PWA desktop apps to Chrome sometime in mid-2018. Because of this, other companies are jumping on the PWA bandwagon: it works on Samsung Android phones in the Samsung browser, Firefox on Android, and Opera on Android.
