Atlanta mayor's race comes down to close call

06 December 2017

As expected, the race came down to the wire as Bottoms went head to head at the polls against 65-year-old Mary Norwood, who ran as an Independent and would have been the city's first White, female mayor had she won instead.

Bottoms spoke early Wednesday at an Atlanta hotel, saying near the end of her speech that "I am just in awe of what God is able to do". According to officials, approximately 800 votes separated Keisha Lance Bottoms and Mary Norwood after local officials tallied more than 92,000 ballots. Dist. 9 contender Dustin Hills eked out a victory over Kwame Abernathy, while Marci Collier Overstreet bested Harold Hardnett for the Dist. 11 seat. Norwood says she's waiting until absentee ballots from members of the military and provisional ballots are counted.

"We will be asking for a recount", Norwood said.

Norwood has requested a recount in the latest contest because of the close margin.

Atlanta has a new mayor-elect, and it's a Black woman for the second time in the city's history.

If Bottoms wins, it would continue what has been called the city's black political machine, which has dominated the mayor's office since the mid-1970s. Parts of the city are more diverse, younger and wealthier than they have been in years.

What Sanchez Said To Herrera During Arsenal vs. Manchester United Is Outrageous
So desperate is Guardiola to sign his former Barcelonapupil, he is willing to pay more than double City's original offer of £20m. Arsenal sit fifth in the table at present, one point behind Liverpool and 15 adrift of unbeaten leaders Manchester City .

Transportation, public safety and affordable housing are among the most pressing challenges facing the city's new mayor.

"We're behind the times in terms of having a modern transportation system compared to what you see in NY or Washington", said Kendra A. King Momon, professor of politics at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta.

"We knew it would be close", Bottoms told Good Day Atlanta's Buck Lanford. "That's a huge issue that we have to address".
