Texas State University Halts Greek Life After Fraternity Pledge Dies

Texas State University suspended all fraternity and sorority activities on Tuesday, a day after the death of a Phi Kappa Psi pledge - the latest in a string of similar episodes on campuses across the country.

Phi Kappa Psi Executive Director Mark Guidi said the organization is "heartbroken" by the death of Ellis, who he described as a new member of the fraternity.

Ellis's friends told authorities that Ellis had attended an off-campus social event Sunday with members of his Fraternity.

In September, Maxwell Gruver, a freshman at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, died after a fraternity drinking game, resulting in the establishment of a specific task force to review relevant campus policies.

Texas State has suspended fraternity and sorority chapters following his death. These chapters are prohibited from holding new-member events, chapter meetings, social functions, and philanthropic activities until a thorough review of the Greek Affairs system is completed.

Atascocita High School graduate Matthew Ellis was found unresponsive in an off-campus apartment near Texas State University on Monday, according to the San Marcos Police Department.

If it is determined that Ellis' death is hazing related, charges could range from providing alcohol to a minor to manslaughter.
