Charlie Fry, 25, had been in the water off Avoca Beach, 60 miles north of Sydney, when he was attacked on Monday.

"I was just surfing, (saying) get in as fast as possible, ride the wave as fast as possible, ride the wave as long as you can and start paddling for your life essentially".

"I didn't feel the teeth going in, it felt like I was smacked, it felt like a hand, a hand grabbing me, shaking me", he said, calling the attack a "close call".

"I turned to the right and I saw a shark's head come out of the water with its teeth and I just punched it in the face", he told Nine News.

Fellow surfers took him to Gosford Hospital, where he was treated and released.
