Bill Gates Invests $80 Million in Arizona Smart City

14 November 2017

The area is now completely undeveloped-it's now desert wasteland - but the convenience of this is that everything can be built from scratch, and laid out in as convenient a fashion as possible, so that traffic can be carefully controlled, neighborhoods can be given plenty of space, and even crime can be kept low through city planning techniques to discourage untoward activity.

Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is set to build a new "smart city" with a population of nearly 200,000 people, according to Independent. The investment was made through a group controlled by Gates' investment firm Cascade Investment, which bought a stake in a 24,800-acre development in Belmont.

Belmont Partners expressed that the land transformation would be like an unused-empty slate turned into a purposeful city standing on flexible structural design. The 25,000 acres of land is about 45 minutes west of Phoenix, in an area called the West Valley. With 470 acres of land assigned for public schools, the city will have 80,000 homes and the left over 3,400 acres would be of open land, wrote Fortune.

Same-Sex bill could override anti-discrimination laws
This gives the Smith bill an immediate advantage over its legislative rival, a bill penned by Liberal senator James Paterson. It also allows religious organisations to refuse to make goods and services for the goal of a marriage.

According to Belmont Partners, the city will have space for about 80,000 residential units. In a few years, this land will be occupied by a community of thousands, where the city's citizens will be driven around in vehicles that are completely autonomous.

"He's coming to Arizona", Ronald Schott, executive emeritus at the Arizona Technology Council, told WPNX.

Arizona, which neighbours California, home to tech hub Silicon Valley, has always been trying to become the go-to place for innovative technology companies.

Briskman has thanked online donors, writing "Through your very generous donations, many of those heavy burdens have been lifted". All the money raised goes directly to Briskman, he says on the site.

It isn't yet known when construction will begin, but Gates' vision appears to echo that of Google, which is set to create Quayside, its own high-tech community, in Toronto. Several big players working on autonomous vehicles including Intel, Uber and Waymo are testing innovations in Arizona.

Albeit he slipped from the list of the world's richest men, the wealth of Bill Gates is still beyond the imagination of most of the people.

"Finally, Arizona's getting recognised for being a place for innovation".

"Belmont is an incredible opportunity for the state of Arizona", Grady Gammage, Jr., an attorney representing Belmont Partners, said in a statement.
