Merkel urges quiet diplomacy to resolve Qatar crisis

The Qatari emir met earlier on Friday in Berlin with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said the crisis would be resolved only through quiet diplomacy.

Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani expressed his desire to end the dispute with Arab neighbours.

Merkel's government has announced efforts to mediate in the crisis, which saw Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severing diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar in June.

Stock markets in the Gulf may have a firm tone on Sunday, taking their cue from strong crude oil prices and upbeat global bourses, while Qatar's index may recover slightly after the emir said he was ready for talks to end the Gulf crisis.

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged the lifting of a Saudi-led embargo on Qatar in effect since June 5, media reports said.

The announcement followed indirect negotiations between Palestinian groups Fatah and Hamas in Cairo . Officials also said more information was needed before considering it a done deal.

The Arab Federation for Human Rights has refuted allegations made by the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar about the alleged violation of global law by the anti-terrorism quartet, in their boycott of Qatar. He left the Elysee palace without speaking to the press.

In Ankara, the two leaders "stressed the need for a resolution through diplomatic means" to the crisis, according to Erdogan's office.

The Arab states accuse Qatar of backing "terrorism", an allegation Qatar denies.
