12 August 2017

University officials said they are expecting as many as 10,000 people to show up to watch the eclipse.

Williams, 22, a recent graduate of College of Charleston in SC, was one of the very first people to use Getting a Feel for Eclipses, a tactile guide that uses different textures to show the eclipse's path and geometry.

It will be a total eclipse in a small swath from the West Coast to the East Coast and a partial eclipse for the entire North American continent.

Aspiring eclipse watchers in northern IL only will be able to see about 87 percent of the sun obscured. The telescopes will be spread evenly along the 14 states that will experience a full solar eclipse.

If you haven't placed an order yet - or your glasses are arriving after the solar eclipse - don't panic yet. The main show begins at 1 p.m. and will cover the path of totality the eclipse will take across the United States, from OR to SC. The eclipse will still be visible outside of this pathway, as a partial eclipse.

"The total solar eclipse is an exciting event, which could cause distractions for motorists", Illinois State Police Director Leo Schmitz said. These provide a popular way for viewing solar eclipses. Untold millions more will see it streaming online, or via photos and videos posted to social media. In fact, we've known about this eclipse, and it's been on all of our calendars for decades now. "Now we're hearing that Atchison, all those places, are so busy, they may not make it to those places". In fact, they say sunglasses can give a false sense of security, that it is OK to look into the sun if they are dark enough. "Eclipses are addictive, once you see one, you'll want to see more".

Yang said Kansas City, Kansas, has had a great tourism season so far this year, and this adds to it.

"There is a huge difference, between 99 percent and totality", Zeiler said, explaining that the best part about totality is "the corona of the sun", which will not be visible even in a 99.5 percent eclipse.

There are several viewing parties planned here for the community and tourists.

The event team asked people planning to attend the free event to register. A person would not know until he or she looks away and is left with permanent central vision loss. Pizza also will be available for purchase.

Bring a pair of solar viewing glasses.

I'm told that if I can't find any of these eclipse glasses, to try checking them out on Amazon or Wal-Mart. The eclipse itself ends at 4:01 p.m. EDT. The CVB has its own eclipse website page at www.VisitKansasCityKS.com/solareclipse2017.
