Cmdr. Ron Flanders, a Navy spokesman, said Monday that the destroyer reported to officials that it collided at 2:20 a.m. Saturday with the Philippine-flagged container ship off the coast of Yokosuka near Tokyo.

The badly damaged destroyer was towed to the 7th Fleet's home base in Yokosuka, Japan.

The U.S. Navy on Monday identified seven sailors killed when their destroyer collided with a container ship off Japan, smashing the side of the ship and flooding berths where the crew were sleeping.

Bodies of seven USA sailors recovered after the US destroyer collided with with Philippine-flagged vessel CX Crystal near south of Tokyo Bay in Japan.

Seven US sailors died in the incident, Sputnik reported, the largest death count in an incident aboard a US Navy vessel since suicide bombers killed 17 US sailors on the USS Cole in 2000.

Many across America anxious when they heard that the USS Fitzgerald, a 10,000-ton guided-missile destroyer, had collided with the ACX Crystal, a 29,000-ton container ship off the coast of Japan Saturday (June 17). Numerous crew on the US ship were asleep when the collision tore a gash under the waterline on the warship's starboard side, flooding two crew compartments, the radio room and the auxiliary machine room.

Speaking in reference to the accident on Monday, Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, the commander of the US Navy's 7th Fleet, told reporters that "our deepest sympathies are with the families of these sailors".

Despite the significant damage to the destroyer, Aucoin said he expected it would rejoin the fleet.

"It's a large gash near the keel of the ship, so the water flow was tremendous", Aucoin said.

Acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley said the Navy is determined to get to the bottom of things. "They are now being transferred to Naval Hospital Yokosuka where they will be identified".

A Jane's Intelligence Review expert said that he suspected from the data available that the ACX Crystal was running on autopilot and that nobody was on the bridge at the time of the accident.

The ACX Crystal had 20 crew Filipino crew members aboard and there were no injuries on that vessel, a Japanese Coast Guard official said.

"We will coordinate with Japanese authorities on investigations and will address specific requests for access in accordance with normal procedures", a Navy spokesman said.

United States 7th Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin said USS Fitzgerald experienced extensive damage and flooding after a collision with ACX Crystal at about 56 nautical miles off the coast of Honshu, Japan.

He also praised their colleagues for saving the USS Fitzgerald from further damage and bringing it back to port.

The Fitzgerald had compromised propulsions after suffering damage on it's side below the water line and a USA defense official said there was flooding in three compartments.
