Trump Suspected Of Interfering In Russia Investigation

28 June 2017

The Washington Post reported this week that Mueller is investigating whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice when he suggested Comey drop an FBI investigation into Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, as well as when he fired Comey.

"Trump had received private assurances from then-FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation".

Trump has regularly turned to Twitter to blast reports about his alleged connections to Russia or the inquiries into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives.

The latest development was first carried in the Washington Post.

Why is the president being investigated?

President Trump on Thursday criticized reports that he is now under investigation for obstruction of justice in connection with the firing of FBI Director James Comey, denouncing it as another "witch hunt" that is unfairly targeting him.

He followed that up 12 minutes later with a second tweet: "Crooked H destroyed phones w/ hammer, "bleached" emails, & had husband meet w/AG days before she was cleared- & they talk about obstruction?" "I hope you can let this go".

In the most famous presidential investigation, Watergate, Archibald Cox was appointed special prosecutor on May 18, 1973 - by June 5, Nixon was complaining about being attacked by Cox.

Trump did not directly address the allegations that he is being probed for possibly obstructing justice - a potentially impeachable offense.

But Mr Comey also testified that, to his knowledge, the president had not tried to stop the Russian Federation investigation. Nor did he deny that he has entered the miniscule ranks of sitting presidents who have become subjects of criminal investigations.

White House officials said the president is not considering such a step.

"I faced great pressure because of Russian Federation". The New York Times also reported the story.

Anything else to be examined?

Who is going to be interviewed?

Rosenstein prepared a memo for Attorney General Jeff Sessions back in early May, which raised repeated questions about how Comey had handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation - at first, that seemed to be the basis for Comey's firing by the President, until Mr. Trump said a few days later that the Russian Federation investigation was on his mind.
