AT&T brings Fixed Wireless Internet to eight more rural locations

28 June 2017

American telecom operator AT&T today announced the expansion of its fixed wireless Internet for rural and underserved locations in 8 new states.

As the FCC pushes its Connect America Fund initiative, AT&T has expanded its Fixed Wireless Internet (for rural and undeserved locations) service to eight more states.

AT&T's fixed wireless first launched in Georgia this year and now reaches more than 70,000 homes or buildings with the addition of service in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana and the Carolinas, the company said.

AT&T initially launched fixed wireless Internet service in Georgia in April.

"We're committed to connect hard-to-reach locations to the internet. This changes lives and creates economic growth for these areas", comments Cheryl Choy, vice president of wired voice and internet products at AT&T. Additional 50 GB buckets are charged at $10 per month with a $200/month maximum.

Customers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio and Texas will be able to access the offering by the end of the year.

AT&T said it plans to serve over 400,000 locations by the end of 2017 and over 1.1 million by 2020.

The investment to connect rural areas in the USA with fixed wireless Internet is part of its FCC Connect America Fund commitment. Fixed Wireless Internet is designed specifically for AT&T's rural customers, and involves the company installing an antenna on the customer's property that then works with the closest cell tower.
