May's Conservatives sign power deal with Northern Ireland's DUP

26 June 2017

Put together, the two parties will have enough seats in the House of Commons to command a majority in Parliament on key votes.

Commenting on the deal, Lib Dem leader Tim Farron accused the Prime Minister of "throwing cash" at the DUP while British schools "are crumbling and our NHS is in crisis".

"I hope the parties will look beyond their differences and come together with a shared sense of common goal to serve all communities in the best interests of Northern Ireland", May said in a statement.

And she used that word again today, saying that the new agreement with the DUP will "give us the certainty we require as we embark on our departure from the European Union, and help us build a stronger and fairer society at home".

The company reported $1.14 earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter, beating analysts' consensus estimates of $1.11 by $0.03. Zacks' earnings per share averages are an average based on a survey of sell-side analysts that cover Wyndham Worldwide Corp.

As part of the deal, signed by Gavin Williamson for the Conservatives and Sir Jeffrey Donaldson for the DUP, there will be no downgrade to the pensions triple lock and the winter fuel payments will remain.

"I think not, no", Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said when asked if the deal in London had influenced progress in Belfast to revive the power-sharing executive that collapsed in January.

Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster says that May agreed to provide 1.5 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) in funding to Northern Ireland without providing further information. "So the agreement we have come to is a very, very good one".

The DUP supported Brexit but has emphasised the need to keep the border with the Irish republic open, and Foster said the deal would back a Brexit process "that supports all parts of the United Kingdom".

In addition, due to the importance of agriculture to Northern Ireland, May has promised to make agriculture a "central policy area" during the Brexit negotiations. "This agreement will operate to deliver a stable government in the United Kingdom's national interest at this vital time", Foster said in a statement.

May called the snap election three years before legally required to do so in an effort to secure a mandate which she said would strengthen her position going into Brexit talks. "It will be totally transparent and once we conclude the deal that will happen". Talks are also on to restore the Northern Ireland assembly, which was dissolved earlier this year.

In a similar way, the formula did not apply to city deals in Scotland and Wales, or previous packages of support for Northern Ireland, a Number 10 source said.
