One dead, 10 injured after driver plows into crowd outside London mosque

19 June 2017

Messages of support and solidarity have once again been sent to London following another incident that has been classed as terror related.

The van driver in the mosque attack was arrested after being seized and prevented from fleeing by bystanders; a Muslim imam reportedly stopped the crowd from injuring the attacker.

Police said they arrested a 48-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and that no other suspects had been identified.

London has seen several deadly terrorist attacks in recent months. "This time, British muslims, as they left a mosque having broken their fast and prayed together at their sacred time of the year", she said.

The Metropolitan Police said that one man was pronounced dead at the scene and ten others were injured.

London police said the driver was detained by the crowd until police arrived. Eight of the injured were taken to hospitals and the rest were treated at the scene.

Van appears to be a hire vehicle from a company in Wales.

Those targeted in the attack were leaving the local Finsbury Park Mosque and the neighboring Muslim Welfare House, another community Islamic center, just after midnight following Ramadan prayers.

Craig said she served Hodgkinson "a handful of times " in the past couple of months. "I think he just wanted a break", she said. Authorities also confirm Hodgkinson legally purchased a 9 mm handgun and an assault-style rifle from licensed firearms sellers.

The Guardian reported that it is not clear whether or not the man who died at the scene passed away due to the attack.

"Sadly Londoners are waking to the news of another terrible incident in the capital that has left a number of people seriously injured", Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Counter Terrorism Command Neil Basu told reporters early Monday. He said that the elderly man was dead after that.

It was the third attack in London since March in which vehicles were used as an attack method, following attacks on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.

Mohammed Shafiq of the Ramadhan Foundation, a Muslim organisation, said that based on eyewitness reports it seems to be a "deliberate attack against innocent Muslims". The Labour leader said: "The response by all three emergency services was very timely and very quick".

"I offer my condolences to the family and friends of the man who has died, and our thoughts are with the people who have been injured, their family and friends".

"Everyone was shouting "a van's hit people", she said. Another said the attacker shouted about killing Muslims as he was held by local people.

"He punched me in the head", Hashi said, showing his bruises.

Police have not yet determined whether the fatality was a result of the van attack. CNN spoke to a man at the company, who said he was the owner but declined to give his name.

"Police say incident has all the "hallmarks" of a terrorist" incident.

"Over the past weeks and months, Muslims have endured many incidents of Islamophobia, and this is the most violent manifestation to date", Khan said.

Numerous victims are believed to have just left evening prayers after breaking the Ramadan fast.

"In light of last night's attack, that protection has been strengthened and increased. Mosque safety needs to be stepped up and this includes entry and exit points", it said in a statement.

The crash occurred near the Finsbury Park Mosque as worshippers were leaving after Ramadan prayers. Another 22 victims lost their lives from a suicide bombing at a concert in Manchester in May.

Moreover, extra United Kingdom police resources have been deployed to reassure communities following an attack near Finsbury Park mosque and police will assess security needs in mosques.

The London Bridge attack was on June 3. Police believe the rampage is inspired by Muslim extremist ideology.

The police investigation into the incident is being carried out by the Met's Counter Terrorism Command.
