On an Erin Hills course that again lacked enough wind to be the stern test the U.S. Open wants, Brian Harman weaved his way through traffic at the top of the leaderboard Saturday for a 5-under 67 and a one-shot lead over Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Tommy Fleetwood. Furyk reached 10-under 200.
This is the first time in 25 years that the U.S. Open has played as a par 72.
Staying that deep into the red might not prove as easy. And if that's not enough of a traffic jam at the top, 18 players are separated by three shots to start the third round.
"I'm not sure when it's going to sink in or when i'm going to realize what I did", Thomas said.
"I love golf course architecture".
But Thomas was more focused on the 63 than the par record for the Open. One shot behind him was South Korea's Si Woo Kim, who posted a 68 in the penultimate round.
Fowler was among those who wouldn't mind seeing the conditions toughen up for the final 18 holes. "It's sometimes nice being out front because you can afford to make a mistake".
Unlike loveable loser Mickelson when it comes to the America's national championship, Harman is playing in just his third U.S. Open (he missed the cut in the other two) and the first he was exempt into. And he wasn't through.

In the only match played Saturday, Smolov took his chance to shine. " I think that my rights have been violated ", Shprygin said. It was reported past year that Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the visa-free system for 2018 World Cup fans.
Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., struggled in round three, shooting a 3-over 75 to fall to 1-over par for the week.
McIlroy birdied four of his last six holes at Erin Hills to improve seven shots on his opening 78, but still missed the cut by four shots.
Only eight shots separate the leaders from the players who made the cut on the number.
Still, he was pleased overall on a day when only 11 players topped his 69. Tom Kite won his only major. Thirty-three players broke par Saturday, a record for the third round of an Open.
"It was a good bogey though", joked Fleetwood, who regained his composure to hit a superb pitch from well below the putting surface.
The thrilling finish vaulted Thomas into the clubhouse lead on 11 under par late in the third round but with numerous contenders still out on the course and threatening to catch him. No one had a chance.
Casey started eagle-birdie and finished with two birdies over the final four holes for his 66.

Pakistan defeat India to win Champions Trophy
Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman have brought up their fifties as Pakistan are off to a flying start in an all important final. That match saw Pakistan bowled out for just 164 in what coach Mickey Arthur labelled a "shambolic display".
Scheffler is three shots back of the lead on a jam-packed leaderboard.
"Usually when you shoot even in a U.S. Open and you're one off the lead, you're not six down afterward", J.B. Holmes said.
The course had been softened by rain earlier in the week, and it finally played the way the USGA wanted in the final round. What dropped him under double digits were two bogeys that didn't really matter.
That victory was redemption after 2015 when, on the bumpy, much-criticized greens at Chambers Bay, he three-putted from 8 feet on the final hole to give away the win, then the tie.
He is in strong form and was poised to win two FedEx Cup playoff events previous year, losing to great finishes to Dustin Johnson (him again) and Rory McIlroy. "But it isn't a U.S. Open course that I'm familiar with the way it was set up". A mere hiccup. On Saturday, he got to 14 under, then on Sunday, he widened the gap versus par to 16 under.
American Patrick Reed also flirted with the U.S. Open record, signing for a seven-under 65 to headline a pack of five at eight-under.
"I was teeing off and I looked up and saw it on fire, and I felt sick to my stomach", Jamie Lovemark said. The tournament was never really in doubt after that, though the wind arrived and Kaymer couldn't maintain the pace.
Hafeez hails Pakistan spirit for India stunner
Earlier, Pakistan seamers dished out a superb bowling effort to finish the England innings in 49.5 overs at the Sophia Gardens. In the end, Ben Stokes, who played an unusual knock of 34 off 64 balls, helped England cross the 200-run mark.
